Dear Subscriber

We’re coming up to the month of May and the Sun is shifting its warmth and light northwards. Astrologically speaking, the planet Jupiter will begin back-tracking through the House of Capricorn on the 8th day of the new month, which would seem to indicate a time for introspection, planning and conserving energy for the future.

While Eastern Mosaic will be preparing for a very busy June, we won’t be taking time out in May – so you can certainly look forward to another four Sundays of top-drawer entertainment, inspired by the East.
Let’s begin with a little prediction...

Whatever your star sign may be, if you’re in the Cape Town area, you’re sure to feel the urge to feast at the Eastern Mosaic Pavilion, which will be one of the special items on the menu of this year’s Good Food and Wine Show, from the 15th to the 18th of May.  The Eastern Mosaic team will be there, hosting live cookery demonstrations daily, and we are looking forward to meeting all our friends in the Mother City.

Moving up the coast to Durban, the Eastern Mosaic team will be spending the day at the Suncoast Casino and Entertainment World on Sunday the 19th of May – so join us as some of Ethekwini’s top chefs go head-to-head at the Suncoast Spice 2008 curry cook-off.

Any fan of Indian cinema will know that the family is a favourite theme and it also lies at the heart of “The Merchants of Bollywood” – a spectacular stage production proudly presented by Big Concerts, 94.7 Highveld Stereo, East Coast Radio and Eastern Mosaic.  This magnificent musical   brings the spectacular story of the Mumbai film industry to life on the South African stage, and the  local run is limited to just four shows, with two at the Durban ICC on the 19th and 20th of May, followed by a further two at Monte Casino in Johannesburg on the 24th and 25th of the month.  Eastern Mosaic will be there – and we’re sure you won’t want to miss this internationally acclaimed show.  By the way, Eastern Mosaic will be attending a sneak preview of the “The Merchants of Bollywood” in Switzerland before it moves to South Africa – and this exclusive coverage will be featured in our May line-up.

Turning to the world of the wardrobe, May will feature the first of a selection of high-profile collections presented at the recent Wills Lifestyle Fashion Week in Delhi.  This will be an appetiser for a major date on the South African fashion calendar – when the Eastern Mosaic Style Showcase brings some of India’s premier designers to the local ramp, as one of the highlights of the MTN Durban Fashion Week.  Booking for this gala evening will open at Computicket early in June – and Eastern Mosaic will keep you up-dated.

Lifestyle is about people – and Eastern Mosaic will focus on some very special South Africans who are role models and nation builders.  Superbike Champion Arushen Moodley is making news on and off the track – while on a road less travelled, the Isnembe Secondary School is building on a heritage first laid down by indentured workers, way back in 1928.  Imraan and Ashwin Desai visited the school, which desperately needs support.  If you can lend a helping hand, please e-mail us at info@easternmosaic.net

Fourteen years on from the dawn of our first democratic elections, South Africa marks Freedom Day on the 27th of April – and Eastern Mosaic will be covering the celebrations at home and abroad – including a very stylish event in India  - which will also be aired in May.

On a more personal note, Eastern Mosaic attended a seminar presented by the internationally renowned author and motivational speaker Deepak Chopra during his recent visit to South Africa – and exclusive coverage of his inspiring presentation will be broadcast in May.

May will be a month of intensive preparation as Eastern Mosaic gears up for the International Indian Film Academy Awards, which will take place in Bangkok from the 5th to the 7th of June.  Now in its 9th year, the IIFA awards week-end offers a spectacular celebration of the worldwide success of the Indian film industry – and Eastern Mosaic will give extensive coverage to the awards event and the build-up to it, including one-on-one interviews with some of the big-name celebrities.

We know that attending the IIFAs would be a fantasy turned reality for ardent film-lovers – and the exclusive new Eastern Mosaic competition could make this dream come true.  A lucky couple will be off to Bangkok to join the audience at this all-star event, courtesy of Ster-Kinekor and Eastern Mosaic.  The competition commences on April the 20th – and you’ll find all the details on the competition page.

Speaking about competitions, a pair of lovebirds will be winging their way across the Indian Ocean to enjoy four fabulous nights in Mauritius, as the Eastern Mosaic 2008 Valentine’s winners.  This amazing prize comes to them courtesy of the Mauritius Tourism Board and the Taj Exotica Resort and Spa – and we wish Iona Scholtz & Partner from Cape Town a Bon Voyage!

To all our viewers, we would like to thank you for entering our competitions! If you haven't won yet - please keep trying. Good luck!

There’s been a most gratifying response to the Eastern Mosaic Community Awards, with strong nominations covering a variety of fields.  As this year marks the launch of this project, it has been decided to extend the closing date for nominations until the end of June.  If you know of an individual or organisation who is worthy of recognition, please click here to be taken to the relevant page.
